The Tang Dynasty poet Lu Tong (c. 775–835), who wrote the Register of Tea, was a lifelong tea addict and was known as the Immortal of Tea. In this painting he is seen sitting on a matted platform beside a bamboo-strapped tea stove on top of which there is a teapot on the boil. On a table beside the platform, there are a canister of tea, a teapot and a tray of tea bowls. Alongside, a bearded servant kneels to fetch water. An elderly maidservant approaches the platform bearing a bowl of fruit in both hands. In the background there is a flowering magnolia and a rockery with flowers and plants.

Ding Yunpeng was a painter of the Ming Dynasty and the most well-known painter of figures after Qiu Ying. He was best at Buddhist subjects and beneath his brush, Buddhas, bodhisatvas and arhat became both solemn and yet lifelike.
