Chapter Twenty-One

CINDY

I wait for Shane to drive out of sight before I give the special knock on the back door. This time when the wall of muscles answers the door, he’s friendlier.

“Hey Bambi, come on in,” James says with a toothy smile.

It’s gonna be hard getting used to being called Bambi again. No one’s called me that in years. Hearing it makes me realize I have to get into character if I’m gonna go through with this shit. A rough, crusty, sexy exterior is what it’s gonna take.

The club is different at night. A dim, dank atmosphere with people lurking in the shadows. Men looking to lose themselves at the bottom of a bottle while they enjoy the entertainment. Women working their goods but desperately hoping their knight in shining armor will swoop in and take them away from all this. I don’t think I realized how sad this place was when I worked her before. It was just a means to survive and help my friend survive.

“The boss wants to see you in his office,” James says, bringing me out of my epiphany.

I head for Rick’s office hoping desperately that he hasn’t changed his mind about letting me work. I take a deep breath and knock.

“Come in,” Rick says from the other side.

“James said you wanted to see me,” I say as I walk through the door.

“Have a seat, Bambi,” he insists.

I take a chair to the side of his desk. Rick looks so serious, I’m really afraid this isn’t gonna go well.

“Bambi, I’m a little worried about you.”

“I’m fine Rick,” I respond.

“What the hell are you doing back here, my girl?” he asks.

I can’t help but smile. Rick always used to call me his girl. He never used my stage name. I asked him why once and he told me that I wasn’t a Bambi. He said I didn’t belong in places like this.

“It’s a long story, Rick. My parents died in a horrible car accident and one of their last requests was that Shane, my stepbrother, and I take a road trip together. Last night we were in a small bar in Arkansas and Shane got rogued. She stole every dime we had. Now, I need to work the next few nights to gather enough money to finish this trip,” I explain.

“You’re shittin’ me, right?” He asks and I shake my head no. “Shouldn’t your stepbrother be out there finding a way to get the money?”

“He doesn’t know anyone here and come on Rick, we both know he’s not going to be able to do anything to pull down the money as quick as I’m gonna be able to here,” I snicker.

“I have another idea. You could just let me lend you the money. You can send it back to me when you get home,” he suggests.

“No, no, no,” I insist as I’m shaking my head. “I really appreciate the offer but you know I won’t do that.”

“I see you’re still too proud for your own good,” he says.
