Chapter 28
Ambleside
The next morning, Jess was up and dressed in the only black clothes she had packed â a pair of slim-fitting office trousers and a black blouse with white silk sleeves. She was sitting on the sofa and waiting for Beth after struggling with the mechanism to fix it back into position. Burt or Willow â she wasnât sure which of the black cats â was lounging on her lap and purring as she stroked the cat behind the ears. Jess held a hand up to her mouth as she yawned. Bethâs sofa was uncomfortable, and the cushions were hard and inflexible. The springs underneath prodded her at her back like bony fingers, though that wasnât the thing that had kept Jess awake throughout the night. It was the recurring snapping sound as Sean tumbled down the stairs then hit the ground. Not to mention the fact that he had still been lying there unresponsive when sheâd left. No groaning in pain, no cursing with anger. Nothing at all.
Many times throughout the night, after Elliot and Beth headed off to their rooms, Jess checked the internet using her phone, to see if any word of a man found dead had made the news. There still was none.
âYou sure you donât mind running me into town?â Jess asked as Beth entered the living room, bringing with her a crisp smell of lavender. âI know itâs early and you probably need to open up the café.â
âGirl, I told you, itâs fine,â Beth replied, fixing her hair.
âThanks, Beth,â Jess said, standing up and brushing the cat hairs from her legs. âFor everything: the lift from the station, letting me sleep here, and now driving me around. It really means a lot.â
âDonât mention it. It was nice to have some girl company for a change. Itâs just been me and the cats since Adele took off with that bitch from Spain, and then Elliot moved in⦠and, well, Elliot is Elliot, isnât he!â Beth sighed, sounding annoyed.
âSorry to hear about Adele. Do your parents live close by?â
âWell, my mum died a few years back. My dad is over at Bainbridge House Care Home.â
âOh⦠And Elliot, why⦠why does he live here?â
Beth shot her a look with the corners of her mouth lifting. âHe broke up with his ex. She forced him to leave while she kept the flat, then once Elliot moved his shit in here, she gave it up anyway and went back to her mumâs place. She was one nasty bitch!â Beth sneered.
âOh, I seeâ¦â
âWhy are you asking about my brother?â Beth asked, her eyebrow raised. âDo you⦠like him or something?â
Jess felt her cheeks flare up. âNo⦠I was just⦠curiousââ
âShit!â Beth interrupted Jessâs poor excuse and stared at the clock.
âWhatâs up?â Jess asked.
âMy dad. I usually visit him first thing Saturday mornings. I go early so that I can get back and open the café. I canât afford to close on a Saturday. Itâs my busiest day!â
âItâs fine. I
