Eisenhower suffering a heart attack, the White House Chief Physician delivered advice to Americans on avoiding heart disease: stop smoking, and cut out fat and cholesterol.[171] This press conference would influence nutritional science for decades in the wrong direction. Scientist Ancel Keys had found a correlation between intakes of cholesterol and saturated fats and cardiovascular disease in 1950, five years before Eisenhower’s heart attack, and further proved his hypothesis through his 1958 “Seven Countries Study,” where the correlation between fat and heart disease was also found in citizens in Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Japan, and Finland.[172] Keys, Eisenhower, and the White House Chief Physician worked in tandem to explain the effects of fat on a growing number of men with heart diseases.
