CHAPTER 20

“Julian. What are you doing here?” I asked as an embarrassed heat rose to my cheeks. It felt like I’d been caught doing something wrong, even though I hadn’t actually done anything at all.

His dark eyes stared straight through mine. “I live here. How do you think you got here?”

“I’m so confused. How could you live here when he lives here?” I glanced from Julian to the stranger.

“Remember that dog I was telling you about?” the stranger asked with a smirk.

Oh, that was right. I’d completely forgotten about the dog. “I haven’t seen your dog. Wait, let me guess. You don’t really have one – the same way your dead relatives were just ornaments in your front yard.”

“Ornaments?” Julian asked, glancing over at the other guy with raised eyebrows. “Really? You told her they were ornaments?”

“Yeah, but then I told her the truth,” the guy replied, as though the answer should have been obvious. Then he turned to me. “As for the dog, there is one... he’s just not the type that barks and sheds all over. Though I’m pretty sure he does drool sometimes. And I didn’t lie about his name.” He glanced over at Julian then. “Where have you been all morning, least favorite sibling of mine?”

“You guys are brothers?” I glanced, wide-eyed, from Julian to the stranger.

“Yes. Unfortunately,” Julian muttered under his breath.

As I let this knowledge sink in, I suddenly realized what it meant: this guy – this stranger – was Dominic Archer, the guy who almost every girl at school lusted after. He was the one who I’d been spending time with?! Most of the girls at school would have been insanely jealous if they found out he’d saved my life, and that wasn’t even to mention that I’d woken up in his bed earlier that morning, even though I still didn’t really know how I’d ended up there.

As I stared at the two brothers, I took their appearances in, trying to make sense of it all. I never would have guessed that the two of them were related. They didn’t look anything like each other.

While Julian’s features were dark, Dominic’s were light. Their bodies were different, too. Julian’s was rock-hard, almost like that of a wrestler or football player. While Dominic was strong, too (which he’d proved by how effortlessly he’d been able to pick me up in the woods earlier that day), he was definitely on the leaner side. His build could have easily belonged to a swimmer or a runner.

There was no denying that both brothers were incredibly attractive, though. Good looks apparently ran in the Archer family. Of course I’d known that already... It was just that seeing Dominic for the first time really confirmed it for me. All of the girls at school said that Dominic was the cuter of the two brothers, but to be honest, I couldn’t decide which one I thought was cuter. They were both attractive in their own way, though I still felt more of a pull to Julian, for some reason.
