On the topic of honesty, I should say this: the misconception would be I started writing love letters and the depression skipped off to haunt some other body. That isn’t true. I’m not an expert on depression, I just know it’s not a one-size-fits-all sort of deal. And I am only saying this because I don’t ever want to belittle the beast that is depression and how it manifests in so many people.

If I could, I would draw a map of depression—I’d draw out the high highs and low lows. The valleys of it and the deserts. But you see, there’s the catch. Maps get drawn to lead you somewhere. Maps get drawn because there is an X to mark the spot or a tiny house planted in the corner that symbolizes, “This is where you will end up.”

That is the trickiness of depression though. He doesn’t easily let you draw maps of him. He won’t tell you where you’re headed. You might have forests and I might have bogs. The most important thing is you just keep going. With no map. And no compass. And sometimes not even real truth to guide you. You just have to keep going. And along the way, you find things to hold tight to. Hope. And good conversations. And people who stick with you until morning. You find things to clutch. For me, that was a yellow towel from my mother.
