Chapter 9
Idriel stared after the two demons, and then at the closed door of the infirmary. A piece of Asmodeus. He turned to Eligor. The demon's head was bowed, his silky braid hung over his shoulder. How to get that cursed thing out of his chest?
Idriel touched his own chest and the scar there. A headache stabbed at the inside of his skull, but the pain in his chest had receded, practically faded. How did resonance work, if that was what had happened? How did he take away Eligor's pain and somehow neutralize it? If he could do all this, maybe he could also absorb the poison from Eligor's body and cure him.
His heart hammered. "How did you get that thing inside you, Eligor?"
The demon raised his dark eyes. His gaze was bleak. "When I betrayed Heaven and Fell."
Idriel couldn't bear the despair in Eligor's eyes but forced himself not to look away. He knew he should be feeling righteous anger at someone who betrayed the Lord, but for some reason he couldn't summon anything but sadness. "What happened?"
Eligor snarled and turned his head away. "When I was struck in the chest, I pulled the Asmodei out and thought I was done with it. A piece must have broken inside."
Idriel took a deep breath. "I meant, why did you Fall?"
The demon's body tensed, muscles standing out on his legs and arms as if he fought some invisible opponent. "It's a damned long story."
"I want to hear it."
"I betrayed Heaven for a traitor."
Ice spread inside Idriel. "Someone like me, huh?"
Eligor turned to look at him, eyes wide. He shook his head and pulled his knees in, curling on his side on the bed. "He was a Dominion, recently placed under my command. Phaldor. I hadn't desired anyone in this way before him. He was handsome and fun and he talked to me of wonders I had never known. I was fascinated by him. He seemed to glow with an inner light that spoke to me."
Eligor's eyes closed for a moment. When he opened them again, they were hard like metal. "Then a mission went wrong; we lost teammates in a fight and had no idea where they'd gone to. Just disappeared. Everyone spoke little, their Glories wavered, dim and full of doubt and cracks. Phaldor started talking of injustice in Heaven, of the horror of the Fall. Of good angels thrown into Hell for petty lies and for love. He said that God wasn't paying any fucking attention to us, that His mind was turned to the Higher Spheres." Eligor's mouth twisted into a jagged smile.
Idriel began to wish he hadn't asked for the story. "Eligor... "
"He trusted me." The words rushed out of Eligor now. "He said so. I believed him. He asked for my help. I promised it to him."
Idriel shivered.
"Phaldor asked for a favor." Eligor paused, his eyes glittering bright. "Have you ever done foolish things because of faith, Idriel? I had faith in him. I thought I understood him, I thought I could see what he needed.
