Chapter 11

Crisis Mode

Desiree rode back to her parents’ Idlewild estate in shock. She didn’t know how exactly to feel after spending the afternoon with Tyson like they hadn’t missed a beat in seventeen years. Desiree’s head swam as she kept replaying how he had held her and then kissed her. She’d pushed him away, but she had still felt something deep in her soul when he did it. Tyson had apologized profusely, but within minutes, as they sat on the sand, staring out at the water, like they’d done so many times as teenagers, he had put his arm around her again and she’d laid her head on his shoulder.

“You’re so stupid, Desiree,” she grumbled aloud now. “That man is married. He is being nice only to get close to Tyree.” She scolded herself until she pulled in her parents’ driveway.

Rebecca was on the expansive front porch, her arms folded across her chest, like she knew Desiree had done something wrong. Desiree parked her car, looked at herself in the visor mirror to make sure nothing was amiss on her face, and got out of the car.

“Hey,” she called out to Rebecca.

“Evening, Desi,” Rebecca said, a hint of accusation in her tone.

“Everything okay?” Desiree asked, feeling guilty as hell.

“Fine. I was just wondering where you and Tyree went off to so early,” Rebecca said, her eyebrows arched.

“I went to a meeting . . . Tyree should be in his room,” Desiree said, winded after climbing the front steps. “He likes to sleep late, but not this late.”

“Oh,” Rebecca said. “He’s not here. I haven’t seen him since last night.”

“What?” Desiree said, her voice going up a few octaves. “What do you mean?”

“I saw him at the party, talking to Junior for a while, but I haven’t seen him since then,” Rebecca explained. “Of course, I had to tend to your father, so maybe I missed him.”

“I saw him right before I left the party for my bed. I had a headache. Tyree kissed me good night,” Desiree said. Then she thought about it. When she’d gotten up and snuck out to meet Tyson, she hadn’t wanted Tyree to see her and ask her any questions. But she had assumed he was in his room, asleep.

“Oh goodness,” Rebecca said, worry cropping up in her voice.

Desiree rushed inside the house and raced up to Tyree’s room, which was really Junior’s old bedroom in the house. She opened the door and found the room empty. Frantic, Desiree raced to her own bedroom. Empty. Then to Donna’s old room. Empty.

“Shit,” Desiree panted as she scrambled to the far east end of the house, where her parents’ suite was located. As she rushed there, she ran into her mother.

“Desi? Everything all right?” Carolyn asked, noticing the wild, frantic look on Desiree’s face.

“Have you seen Tyree?” Desiree asked, her words rushing out.

“He was with Junior at the party, but—” her mother began.

“No! I saw him after that. He was in the house. He is supposed to be here,” Desiree interrupted, on the verge of tears.
