On Friday, the holiest day of the week, when every store and restaurant and office is closed, Khaleh drives us back to Tehran. This time, though, we don’t go to her apartment, she drives us straight to Mehrabad International Airport, pulling to the side just before the entrance.

Why are we here? Justin asks from the back seat.

She turns to him and Shawn, and then me. You are going back home, Khaleh says.

The three of us are quiet, looking at one another, then back to Khaleh.

You mean to L.A.? Shawn finally says.

Areh. Khaleh nods.

Justin’s knees begin to shake, seems like he might open the door and start racing toward the terminal.

But Baba said we had to stay here in Iran, I say, scared that Khaleh’s made a mistake, that once we’re inside the security guards will make us leave the airport, that they won’t let us get on the plane no matter how badly we want to, not without our dad’s permission.

You remember Agha Zadeh? Khaleh says. He and Haji Agha arranged everything, and again she starts to drive, entering the airport. It’s time you boys went home to Maman, she says.

Khaleh pulls to the curb and, outside, waiting for us like she said he’d be, I recognize Agha Zadeh right away, our grandfather’s childhood friend, standing by the terminal. Opening our door for us, he helps Khaleh unload our bags from the trunk. His dark brown eyes have a shine in them, just like Khaleh’s, who now looks away from us, covering her mouth with the end of her hijab.

When Agha Zadeh hands her the envelope with our tickets inside, she doesn’t say a word.

Your mother is going to be so happy to see you three, Agha Zadeh says.

Khaleh walks us to the gate, Agha Zadeh trailing behind. Before walking through the security check, he hands me a backpack stuffed with Persian treats—nuts and dried fruit and lavashak. For when you get home, he says, to remember Iran.
