Outside of bedroom activities, there wasnât much else that garnered much attention. The road was long, dusty in places, muddy in others. Clarissa helped pull them through the Coomera river, something Florence asked for, with far more politeness than he had the first time. Coomera led the way to Helensvale, and then to a place that Calon hadnât actually seen on a map before. All the while, things got steadily busier and more built up. There were the farming towns, sure. But there were others too. Factories, or at least businesses, that created actual goods. There were mills grinding flour and cutting wood. Blacksmiths, using large equipment to hammer iron into shape for wagons. Wagons themselves became something to look at.
There were still plenty of merchants on the road. The Caravan had grown somewhat as they did. Safety in numbers meant something, and Florence didnât dissuade anyone from tagging along. Calon just made sure not to bother keeping too close an eye on any of them.
âErnest Junction,â Calon frowned.
âItâs real,â Suki added. âThereâs just a tunnel now if you went to see it back home. Weâre in Molendinar about where the highway used to turn off to Southport.â
âHow do you know all this shit?â Clarissa asked.
Suki shrugged. âI know a lot of stuff. If I wasnât learning something, my parents would punish me. This was just something that came up one time.â
âSo⦠Whatâs it for then?â Calon asked.
âRailway,â Suki nodded, before frowning. âWhich is weird, that they donât have one.â
Calon nodded. âWeâve already sorta figured out that, while a lot of things are similar. Itâs nothing like the world we came from.â
âNo shit?â Clarissa gaped. âWhat gave it away? Having pop-ups, or the beastkin?â
Calon rolled his eyes. âYou know what I mean. This isnât just⦠An alternate version of the timeline we grew up in. This is more like⦠a fantasy realm, BASED on our timeline.â
âNobodyâs carrying around guns,â Suki pointed out. âAnd while this road is here, thereâs no railway. Does that mean steam power hasnât been invented yet?â
âI doubt that,â Calon shook his head. âIf there was no steam power, then thereâs no industrial revolution.â
âWeâd be well into that by now,â Suki agreed. âIt started almost thirty years before the British discovered Australia, and didnât let up until the eighteen-forties.â
âCould we be after that point, then?â Clarissa asked.
Calon shook his head. âNope, the industrial revolution was an uptick in factories and production. It didnât end when the revolution did, it just became the norm and things continued. This is more like certain things just didnât happen. Weâre still in Australia, the towns are still named what theyâre supposed to be named, but weâve missed a few things.â
âLike cars,â Suki pointed out.
Calon nodded. âEvie and I already thought about that one. The first cars came to Australia in the late eighteen hundreds and were steam powered. It wasnât until just before the first world war, that petrol cars were a thing.â
âHoly shit, we could be alive for the first world war?â Clarissa gasped.
