Chapter Fourteen

Carys didn’t look back the entire walk to her car. Instead she walked faster, barely mentally acknowledging Nick’s car to the left. Why had she kissed Jordan? Why had she wanted to?

She unlocked her rental car with a click of a button, got in and started it. Her mind was spinning, her body on autopilot. They had slept together once. Once, and she had done something stupid like that.

Pulling out of Jordan’s driveway, Carys headed out of the small rural town. There weren’t proper roads out there, not really, just a variety of small ones worn down by repeated usage. Ignoring directions, or common sense, she headed out towards the longer rural roads, the ones that were paved. They were twisty and turny, and she took them faster than she should have. It was reckless, both for her and other drivers, but she didn’t care. The rural farmland passed her in a blur.

After what felt like hours, she pulled to a stop, her heart racing. Her gaze swept the area, surprised to see she was not far out of Vancouver. Not far from where she was staying.

Instead of going home, or what passed for home, she headed back out of town. Not to the rural areas this time, no, but back towards her former rehab facility. The local Agency headquarters.

They weren’t easy to find, which wasn’t unexpected. Of course they had to hide it, and it was easiest to hide in plain sight. Several Agencies hid out in Portland. It was large, it was busy, and no one questioned weird businesses such as ‘Vegan horticulture’.

She parked a few blocks away. She needed to talk to Ghost. To - anyone. Anyone that wasn’t Jordan.

Someone tapped on her window, nearly giving her a heart attack. Instinctively her hand went to her side, where her gun would have been – and close to where one was hidden underneath her seat. She turned to look, and Ghost was standing just outside. His face was like marble.

Carys scowled at him, then turned the car off and got out. “How, exactly, did you know where I would be?”

Ghost’s eyes swept the nearby area. “I scouted potential hiding places nearby and picked the most likely location.” His eyes sparkled. “Especially based on your history.”

Carys bit back a retort. She needed to talk to him, not antagonize him. She took a deep breath before she opened her mouth to speak.

“We’ll talk inside.” Ghost turned and started walking.

Hating how much taller he was than her, Carys started after him, keeping her keys in her hand. She wouldn’t likely be allowed to take weapons inside, but for now she was keeping what she could.

But this time they didn’t head in the direction she thought they would. She knew where the Agency was, where the headquarters were located, but Ghost was leading her down a different alley. A darker one.

Wary of a trap, Carys slowed her pace, ensuring she was far enough away that he couldn’t surprise her. Or, rather that he had to work harder for it.
