Chapter 8

FOR THE LGBTQ culture festival, Adrian chose a simple menu—just a handful of items—but prepared it from the best ingredients he’d bought at the market early in the morning. There was soured milk, and smoothies made of beetroot and lime. Homemade noodles with mushrooms, and fresh sourdough bread with lard and salt. Meatballs with buckwheat, and cucumber salad. Fried liver with caramelized onions, apples, and roasted potatoes. The latter sold out halfway through the day. With Sebastian prompting a friend from a big private television network to do a short report about the unusual food truck and this apparently being a very calm day newswise, curious customers were storming Adrian’s little mobile restaurant. It was overwhelming, but he’d been in situations far worse than this stroke of luck. Feliks and Rosa were still in town, and they came to the rescue like a knife- and ladle-wielding cavalry.

Sebastian had published a glowing review of the food on his blog and in a free morning newspaper just the day before, so loads more people contacted Adrian by e-mail and came to the truck’s opening at the festival to try Gran’s secret-recipe pierogi.

In the days preceding the festival, Marek had taken two days off work to help out with the final touches, such as minor paint jobs and sticking labels on what felt like a million jars. Working together had been a blast, but Adrian was looking forward to getting some sleep in a day or two.

Marek walked in and without asking put on an apron with the Jars logo on the front. “They want to film from outside when we’re inside the truck,” he said. An award ceremony started at the festival, so customers had dispersed somewhat, and the camera crew was using the extra space to get ready. “Make sure the name is visible,” he whispered and turned around a few of the jars with food so the label faced out.

Adrian smiled at him and adjusted the rainbow-colored horns attached to a hair band that helped him keep his hair out of his face when he cooked. “People are loving it. Feliks just came back with trash from the tables and told me someone gave him a glowing review.” He waved at the reporter.

Marek nodded. “No wonder, it’s delicious. You’ve really outdone yourself.”

The reporter nodded at the cameraman, who waved at her to signal they were starting the interview. She smiled and turned toward Adrian. “What made you decide on this kind of cuisine when food trucks with gourmet burgers are all the rage?” she asked, and Marek started slicing limes without being prompted. He must have remembered Adrian telling him it was always good to have some ready for the drinks.

Adrian cleared his throat, trying to remember all the times when he talked about the business to Marek and other friends. He was good with personal interactions, but talking on camera was a different thing altogether. He focused on the reporter and offered her a small sample of pierogi with vanilla quark and blueberries, topped with a generous helping of sour cream.
