Chapter 11
Mason closed down his computer and left his office, the box
with the tie tack in his hand. Dack and Parker were still at their
desks. Without a glance at either, Mason stormed passed them
both to the exit and waited outside the office entrance at the
elevator. He was still fuming. Now he couldn’t use his credit
card until he was issued a new one. Though he should throttle
Dack, he was still deciding how to handle it. He had to break it
off. Had to.
“Come on!” He poked the call button again and again but the
elevator wasn’t coming to his floor any faster. When someone
stood behind him, Mason glanced over his shoulder. Parker was
there, looking down, maybe at his own feet.
Mason blew out a loud breath in frustration and stepped aside
so they were not in a line but side by side.
“You okay?” Parker asked.
Mason gripped the box tightly and decided whether blowing
up and telling Parker what had happened was wise.
“Uh oh.” Parker looked concerned. “Did you find out?”
Mason spun to face him head on. “Yes! How did you know?”
“Some things aren’t easy to hide.” Parker shook his head.
The elevator finally opened and they both stepped into the
empty space. Parker hit the lobby button and they were closed
into privacy.
“I swear, Parker, I’m such a fool. I keep putting up with it.”
“Did you get anything for it?”
Mason tilted his head curiously. “What?”
“You know. Like penicillin or something? Those new strains
can’t be messed with.”
Before Mason could ask what the hell Parker was talking
about, more people heading home stepped onto the elevator,
pushing them to the rear. “What?” Mason asked him again,
softly.
Parker’s mouth parted like he was about to say something,
then he shut up.
In silence they rode down to the ground floor parking area
and Mason waited until he and Parker could speak privately. He
touched Parker’s arm and asked, “What are you talking about?
Penicillin?”
“Uh…” Parker bit his bottom lip. “Never mind.”
“Oh no you don’t.” Mason grabbed Parker’s jacket sleeve and
brought him over to where their assigned spots where in the
parking garage. He nudged Parker to lean back on his Audi and
asked, “What the hell did you find out about Dack?”
“Shit. Mason.” Parker threw up his hands.
“What the fuck? He has some fucking STD?” Mason felt
sick.
“I think so.”
“He told you that? He said, ‘hey, Parker, I got gonorrhea’?”
“No. Nothing like that.” Parker rubbed his forehead and
appeared upset.
“Parker!”
“Fine! I was in the men’s room about a half hour ago.
Someone was in the stall, in agony trying to piss. Okay? Guess
who!”
“Oh fuck!” Mason threw up his hands, still clenched to the
box and about to explode.
“Get checked out, dude.”
“Fuck!” Mason slapped the box onto the trunk of his car and
rubbed his face with both hands in anguish.
“I could be wrong.” Parker picked up the little box and
opened it. “Is this what he got you?”
“Fuck!” Mason had never even gotten the crabs. Never. He
was safe, always, and just the thought that Dack had picked up
something, and didn’t mention it…
“Nice. Henry has great taste.”
“Henry?” Mason stopped short. “Henry got that?”
“Um…” Parker covered the lid on the box.
