Chapter 3

"How is business?" Kal asked her parents, who sat across from her at the dining table. A while ago they had finished a big meal together and everyone now moved about again. But Kal stayed at the table and visited with her parents.

"Well," Thane reported. "We sold eight foals last year."

Kal perked up at the news. In her youth, her father would sell three or four foals, making enough to handle the barn's maintenance. She was happy the horse business had improved for them.

"Your mother is also selling a few of her paintings," Thane mentioned and inflated his chest.

Elora blushed but moved her head in agreement. "I sold one this past winter and I was commissioned to paint another."

Smiling, Kal mirrored her father's pride. Her mother helped on the farm, day in and day out. But in the evenings she drew or painted as a hobby. It would seem that her hobby had turned into more. "You should be proud, mother. Your paintings are gorgeous."

Elora's cheeks took on a deeper shade of red. "Tah."

"It is reassuring to hear you both are doing well." Kal studied their faces and could see they were as close as ever. They had become bonded mates long before she and Fairlee were born or their brother. Most bonded mates remained together for life, but they could still find a level of separation on an emotional level. Her parents were older but intertwined in every way. Kal hoped she and Charlie would have the same future.

After a sigh, Kal decided it was time to brace a difficult topic. The Sworne were a future threat, especially to her family. She and Charlie had discussed what to do about protecting Kal's family. Today was her best opportunity to convince them to agree to her plans.

"Are you certain about this?" Thane asked his daughter after Kal finished her speech about the pending war. Elora rung her hands together and looked between her mate and daughter.

"Ja," Kal replied. "I must be certain that all of you are safe." She turned her attention in her sister's direction, who was standing next to Starr and chatting. Nearby, Talyn was playing with Ragna and Machal. He shifted his form to a strange alien creature with antennas. The pups laughed and squealed when he chased them.

"Where is this farm?" Elora asked, voicing calling Kal back to their conversation.

"Fast Arrow Estate is located in the Lyne Province," Kal explained.

"To the south," Thane murmured and rubbed his dimple chin. "You say soldiers will stay with us?"

"Six soldiers from the Guard. There is a smaller house on the property, and they will be comfortable there," Kal promised. "Fairlee has a tablet and can stay in communication with me and Charlie."

"I've seen the tablet," Elora murmured, then looked at her mate. "We can't very well deny your daughter's request."

Thane had a slight downturn of his lips and stayed quiet. He looked over at Fairlee, then back to Kal. "Does she know?"

"Joh. But I will speak to her." Kal was certain she could convince her sister to take the offer.
