ROUND 5

The first game of the season for the Lady Panthers against Delaware State University Lady Hornets was a disaster. At halftime, the score was 52-28 and the final score was 95-77.

Symone seemed more surprised by the team’s performance than the coaches did and she expressed her feelings verbally as they headed into the lockerroom.

“That was the worst play of basketball I’ve ever seen. As a matter of fact, that wasn’t even a game, that was a shellacking.”

“Where the hell do you get off talking like that?” Dana said angrily.

With a surprised expression on her face, Symone responded, “You must’ve not been lookin’ at the same game I was ‘cause if you were, you’d be agreeing wit’ me.”

“Symone’s right. We sucked ass out there.”

“I don’t give a damn if Symone is president, let alone right, Chris. She wasn’t out there so she can’t talk.”

“You know what Mia, that smart comment right there was more effective than the defense you played the whole game and you know your mouth don’t faze me none.”

Mia stood up and started towards Symone when Coach McInnis impeded her progress.

“Mia, sit down. Symone, shut up,” Coach McInnis ordered.

“Skip the showers and change your clothes. I want everybody on the bus in 20, no 15 minutes. Symone, come with me.”

“What did I . . .”

“Now!”

Out in the corridor, Coach McInnis warned Symone that she was not to open her mouth to speak on the game anymore tonight. Symone thought about challenging her on her demand but could see in her eyes that she was not in the mood and just responded with a nod.

Symone waited for Samantha outside the locker room to avoid being tempted to disobey Coach McInnis’s command.

“Hey Sam.”

“Symone, if this is about the game . . .”

“Naw, forget that. I wanted to know if you’ve seen Regina. She told me yesterday she was coming to the game but I didn’t see her.”

“She told me before she left today that she wasn’t coming. She had a lot of family in for Thanksgiving and thought it would be disrespectful to leave.”

“But Thanksgiving ain’t ‘til Friday.”

Samantha just shrugged her shoulders as she headed to the bus.

It was 8:22am when Symone was suddenly awaken by the telephone.

“Hello?” cracked Symone’s voice into the receiver.

“You ready to run?”

“What?”

“Are you ready to run?”

Symone looked at the phone as if it had done something wrong before she hung up. Again, the telephone rung.

“What?”

“I’m gonna be at your door at nine sharp so you better be ready.”

“Who are you?” Symone asked, but realized she was talking to the dial tone.

Rolling over, Symone stared at the ceiling about five minutes before deciding to get up, not wanting to test Alexis. Being mixed with Puerto Rican and black, although a beautiful combination, Symone knew neither side she wanted to mess with.

“Not bad for the first day.” Symone just looked up at Alexis with a yeah-right expression on her face as Alexis helped Symone stretch her hamstrings.

“You’re tryin’ to kill me, ain’t you?” Alexis laughed, “To be this big time two sport all-star, you’re a wimp.
