30: You Want Her What?
We stood in a beautiful and ornately decorated wooden hall. A banquet hall, to be exact. I had deduced this by virtue of the smells, servants, and loads of food being carted in as we spoke. In stark contrast to our first meeting, the king now wore a long purple robe and wore a golden crown. I could only guess this was his party outfit. I didnât ask. We had bigger fish to fry. Just a little thing called⦠asking for his daughter's hand in marriage.
Kaelana had brought me to meet him, explained I wanted to talk, and then quickly bowed out to help attend to the rest of the setup. I supposed it was only fair. This was a battle I needed to fight alone. Still, I yearned for some kind of backup. Last time I faced the King I had Bazzer and Yanârek on either side of me. Right now I was alone. The King, on the other hand, still had all of his guards. A whole retinue of scowling Trolls with sharp spears. And of course the skulls. Skulls encrusting the weapons, hanging from their necks⦠bones piercing their ears. The royal guard seemed to have a skull fetish.
Iâm not into it, for the record.
The King must have seen my gaze. He let out a rumbling laugh. âBoy, you think I need these guards to keep me safe from you? You are dismissed!â he yelled to his retinue. I saw them exchange wary glances but they all began to back away and give us some space. They did not, however, leave the hall. I saw several of them slink into corners or pretend to be making themselves useful at the buffet tables while keeping a close eye on the King and me.
The King had straightened himself up to his full height, and he was an imposing figure. Like most Trolls, he was much skinnier than the average Ork, but he stood a good two heads taller than me and his older body was still corded with muscle. His steely gray eyes bore down upon me. âWell son, spit it out. Itâs just you and me. You know we have decided to let you go, Kaelana must have told you as much. So why did you request an audience with me? Is this a challenge?â He smirked a little at that last word and brought his fists together then cracked his knuckles and adjusted his neck.
Fight? If only it were that simple.
âSir, I mean, King, your King⦠your majestyâ¦â I stumbled over my words.
Not a great start. Just plow through.
âI donât know what Kaelana has told you, about me⦠and us. When I found her, she was in terrible danger. Humans are terrible evil creatures.â
He nodded at that and grunted his agreement.
Ok good, good, hating humans. We can both get on board with that.
âShe and I quickly became close, because we had a common goal. To find a way to stop what these evil creatures are doing to our lands.
