Notify the Lawkeepers? That was an option.
Someone is dead.
Blake whisked his way down one hallway, then another, not sure at first where he was going, just having to move, because moving might help him think.
Lawkeepers. Yeah, and then what? Him against a mega… they could spin it just about any way they wanted. It was a no-win, and he knew it. Not to mention he'd probably commit career suicide in the process. Which meant what? He'd probably never see Ev again.
Someone is DEAD.
Transpo. Level five. Hop a quick flight to HQ, Tok. Make him see what was happening. Make him understand that a human price was being paid.
The transit took less than half an hour. The hovering HQ suites were a short jaunt from R&D. Blake called ahead, was told that the CEO had no time, and told them that he would need to make time anyway. It was an emergency.
Later, he would not even remember his passage through HQ to Tok's office, his mind was so occupied with everything that needed to be said. The assistant didn't try to stop Blake from going in. That was a beginning, at least.
The office was luxuriously appointed. Tok sat behind a massive desk in a raised contour cradle that lent him a looming, superior presence. He was in the midst of a call when Blake swept in, and he forced Blake to wait several minutes, sitting while the CEO finished his conversation. The travel time and the sitting time did little to calm Blake down. When Tok was finally ready to listen, Blake said: "I think one of your employees is dead, and I think it's narc related. I think some of the workers are mixing Dash and Push. If so we have to put a stop to it before something like this happens again."
"I just received the med report," Tok said. His tone was placid. Blake hadn't been sure what to expect, but composure wasn't it. "You have nothing to blame yourself for."
"What do you mean?" Blake asked. "That's why you're here," Tok replied. "You blame yourself because of our last discussion. You think you had a chance to wipe out the narc problem and that if you did, you might have saved…" Tok looked down at his desk. "Mister Bollard. But you don't have to suffer with that on your conscience."
"Is that right?" Blake replied.
"It is. Because the med report reads that Mister Bollard died of an aneurism. Not something you could have prevented unless you're a neuro-doc."
Of course that was what the med report said. Blake was on the verge of saying the body should be sent to an independent med-lab for autopsy, then thought better of it. Voicing such an opinion, at this point, would only make him look foolish.
"I understand," Tok said. "I do. I think R&D has you distracted. That's why I'm broadening the scope of your assigned duties. Increasing your responsibility. Take a break from R&D, your LT can handle that. I want you to
