There may be times when no matter how you position the board for edge jointing, you’ll wind up going against the grain. This happens when the face grain of the board is traveling at a distinct angle to the edge instead of traveling parallel. To avoid this situation, think about the subsequent edge-jointing step when initially reading the grain. When the face grain has a predominant angle, you should not only be concerned with which direction to feed the board but also with which face would provide the ideal grain direction in the subsequent edge-jointing step. This may sound complicated, but with some practice it will become second nature and within seconds of inspecting a board, you’ll immediately have a plan of action in place.

Against the Grain

This grain slopes down from right to left, the jointer would be cutting against the grain. Turn the board end for end for a better cut.
