We spent the next few days dealing with the aftermath of what happened to Victor. We were all pretty much in agreement that Savannah was responsible for his death. August had several of his betas out searching the woods for her, but if I had to guess, she was long gone by now.

I tried to visit Sean a few times, but he’d been sleeping more than usual, and when he was awake, he got mean. Christophe told me it was a side effect of the withdrawal. He and Bastian had been working on a way to flush his system of the drug they’d been forcing on him in those labs, but it would take time. He was still wild and volatile when he was awake, but the weird thing was, he hadn’t shifted. He stayed in human form the whole time.

Bastian told me there were moments of sudden clarity when Sean would speak or when his eyes would clear. It was the best news we’d received so far, now that we were back to square one with finding the rest of the kidnapped darklings.

Still, I had this nagging feeling that maybe Victor really had known something. From what August had told me about the one-eyed wolf, he hadn’t always been a member of the RedWood Pack. He was a refugee from a pack that was long gone, and as a result, he held no rank. So why was he out in the woods that day? Why was he stalking Faust and me while we were so far from either pack? Not only that, but why did Savannah feel the need to kill him?

None of it made any sense. If Savannah was running with the RedWood Pack now, why would she have killed Victor rather than free him? It wasn’t adding up, and question after question began piling up until it was only a matter of time before I was crushed under the weight of them.

I'd been training with Faust and Merrick for the last two nights out in that field he’d driven me to. It was far enough away from the pack that if I wolfed out and went feral, I wouldn’t be a danger to any of the pups that might be running around. I hated the thought that I might be responsible for any more death, even if I was fairly sure I was starting to get the hang of shifting. Still, the guys watched me carefully every time, like they weren’t sure if this would be the time I’d finally snap.

It was only the three of us again today because Atlas, August, and Bastian had gone into the city. They were trying to find information on my uncle and his wife, probably digging through the archives in the two remaining embassies for answers. They’d been gone for over forty-eight hours, and I was worried, constantly waiting for the end of the day phone call when they’d check in with us. So far, they hadn’t found much that seemed out of the ordinary.
