Later that night, I sat at the desk in my room and read a book. I’d finished with a collection of short stories, and now I was onto a romantic novel. My first full, thick book. It felt so deliciously heavy and thick in my hands. I’d left the door open to let the warm air from the fire come in, but I was still surprised when I heard a knock on the doorframe.

Mikel grinned at me. “That’s one of my favorites.”

“It is?” I looked at the cover of the book and tried to imagine the strong alpha in front of me sitting down to read the sappy story.

“Yeah, it’s brilliant. Where are you up to?” He came into the room, and I motioned for him to sit down at the end of the bed near me.

“The main characters are moving from one side of the forest to the other to avoid some kind of plague? I don’t know, that confuses me. I can’t keep track…” I sighed, frustrated with my mind.

“Oh yeah, don’t worry, it’s not you. That becomes clear later on.”

I smiled with relief and cautiously looked at Mikel. He seemed more relaxed than he had been, and it seemed to make me more comfortable too.

I lowered the book to my lap and cleared my throat. “Mikel… I want you to know I’m really grateful for everything you’ve done for me.”

“It’s nothing—”

“It’s something. In fact, it’s a lot. And I’m sorry I haven’t given you the answers you want. I know you want that. But… I’m scared to trust you. I’m worried I’m doing the wrong thing against you and my people. I don’t want anyone to get hurt.”

A sad cloud passed over Mikel’s face. He nodded and lowered his eyes to the book in my lap. I felt his gaze like a warm caress along my fingers. “I understand. I wish I had more time to earn your trust, but time seems to be limited…”

I was surprised how warm his voice still sounded, even though his words could have been cold. Silence hung heavy between us.

“Other alphas have given me advice on how to get you to open up to me. But I don’t want to play games with you. I don’t like that shit, and you’ve had enough dishonesty in your life already.”

I swallowed as my stomach turned. Mikel looked me in the eye, and the desperation on his face threw me off guard. He reached out and put a hand on my knee.

“So, no games. Eli, here’s the truth. I don’t want to lose you before I’ve had a real chance to know you. I don’t want to scare you off. But more than that, lives are depending on me. I need your help to save my people—and your people. I know it’s a lot to ask, but I’m asking anyway. If there’s any information you have that can help us, please tell me.”

I stared at him. I willed my mouth to move. But my tongue was a heavy weight, and my lips felt like they were sewn shut.
