Later that night, I sat at the desk in my room and read a book. Iâd finished with a collection of short stories, and now I was onto a romantic novel. My first full, thick book. It felt so deliciously heavy and thick in my hands. Iâd left the door open to let the warm air from the fire come in, but I was still surprised when I heard a knock on the doorframe.
Mikel grinned at me. âThatâs one of my favorites.â
âIt is?â I looked at the cover of the book and tried to imagine the strong alpha in front of me sitting down to read the sappy story.
âYeah, itâs brilliant. Where are you up to?â He came into the room, and I motioned for him to sit down at the end of the bed near me.
âThe main characters are moving from one side of the forest to the other to avoid some kind of plague? I donât know, that confuses me. I canât keep trackâ¦â I sighed, frustrated with my mind.
âOh yeah, donât worry, itâs not you. That becomes clear later on.â
I smiled with relief and cautiously looked at Mikel. He seemed more relaxed than he had been, and it seemed to make me more comfortable too.
I lowered the book to my lap and cleared my throat. âMikel⦠I want you to know Iâm really grateful for everything youâve done for me.â
âItâs nothingââ
âItâs something. In fact, itâs a lot. And Iâm sorry I havenât given you the answers you want. I know you want that. But⦠Iâm scared to trust you. Iâm worried Iâm doing the wrong thing against you and my people. I donât want anyone to get hurt.â
A sad cloud passed over Mikelâs face. He nodded and lowered his eyes to the book in my lap. I felt his gaze like a warm caress along my fingers. âI understand. I wish I had more time to earn your trust, but time seems to be limitedâ¦â
I was surprised how warm his voice still sounded, even though his words could have been cold. Silence hung heavy between us.
âOther alphas have given me advice on how to get you to open up to me. But I donât want to play games with you. I donât like that shit, and youâve had enough dishonesty in your life already.â
I swallowed as my stomach turned. Mikel looked me in the eye, and the desperation on his face threw me off guard. He reached out and put a hand on my knee.
âSo, no games. Eli, hereâs the truth. I donât want to lose you before Iâve had a real chance to know you. I donât want to scare you off. But more than that, lives are depending on me. I need your help to save my peopleâand your people. I know itâs a lot to ask, but Iâm asking anyway. If thereâs any information you have that can help us, please tell me.â
I stared at him. I willed my mouth to move. But my tongue was a heavy weight, and my lips felt like they were sewn shut.
