AMY

Something’s changed with Garrett and me.

Our second week into hydrotherapy and neither of us have to say anything.

I know what he likes, and I know what he doesn’t. I know what causes him pain and what is borderline.

None of it is sexual. And that is a major turn on.

He’s beginning to unravel. The layers are slowly being peeled. Like an onion, shedding its skin. And it’s a beautiful thing to watch.

When I saw him helping Zander, my heart skipped a beat.

Helping the kids line up the ball, picking them up when they fall, or completely miss the ball. Every now and again, he takes a peek across the field, towards the older kids at practice. I know that his heart will always belong to football. It’s in his blood. It’s what he knows. My heart aches for him and the sad look on his face.

But I’m also one for empowerment. I’ve given him enough hints, he needs to go over there and check things out. He doesn’t have to be a coach, but the team would love to meet him and get some tips. Why hasn't he gone over there?

It’s like he’s quitting before he’s even tried, and that doesn’t sound like the Garrett “Grizz” Huxley that I know.

All week, we’ve done our session. I’ve been right there, worked his knee, tested out new moves, made sure he’s comfortable but also pushing the limits.

He needs to exercise to get stronger.

Garrett is the type of man that will never give up. I know he trains, and we’ve discussed his gym routine and what he can and can’t do.

He’s a big guy, he likes to work out, but he also has to realize that he doesn’t have to train like he’s playing any more.

The man’s body is insane.

We’ve had brief moments where the two of us lock eyes. I always pretend that nothing is happening. That when I touch his skin and hold his knee, he doesn’t affect me. The trouble is, he does.

His hand has brushed mine a few times, and that’s when he’s done that thing where he goes quiet, stares at me and his nostrils almost flair. It’s like he’s holding something in but won’t let himself say it or act on it.

God, do I want him to act on it?

Is that what he’s feeling? Or am I just imagining it?

No. I’ve been around long enough to know that we have a connection. It’s undeniable. We have a spark. We’re both acting professional but deep down, we want to jump one another.

Maybe I'm back in high school again, fawning over the quarterback. That’s depressing.

I shake my head. No, I know that isn’t true.

I don’t do ego, and I don’t do cocky athletes. But there is something about Garrett…

Once you get past the layers, he’s a decent guy. He’s kind. Funny. Loves his parents. Adores his dog. He even told me a little about his house and how Reeve is moving on with the renovations next week. He’ll have a secure roof and some windows.
