At the Mount Nelson, breakfast was served in the Oasis Bistro, a lovely spot overlooking the swimming pool. Today, its elegance escaped her. Constance sat back in her cane chair, sipped her organic Earl Grey St Clements and frowned. Her annual trip to South Africa was meant to be fun: a respite from the cold and the wind and the rain in London. So far, it had been a bloody disaster and she blamed herself. Men – especially young men – needed to be carefully managed, otherwise they ruined everything with their immature tantrums. Connie Greyland had a Golden Rule she hadn’t broken in twenty-five years: as soon as a companion – she thought of them as companions – became difficult, it was over. Last night, Florian had caused an ugly scene in the dining room and stormed away. She hadn’t seen him since and this morning discovered he hadn’t come to bed.

Connie pushed the smoked salmon scrambled eggs around her plate, too angry to eat. Angry at herself for tolerating his behaviour and for not realising in Hampstead that bringing him here would end in tears. His, not hers.

Their affair was in its fourth month – most of hers hit the rocks long before this – but it was well and truly over. When he returned, as inevitably he had to since he didn’t have two farthings of his own, she’d break the news. Hardly unexpected considering the state of the relationship. Perhaps whatever trollop he was with would foot the bill for the endless stream of G & Ts that so reminded her of Simon, her late husband.

The waiter appeared at her elbow like a ghost with a copy of The Times. The familiarity of the news was comforting: the stock market was up and down on the slightest whim, the weather was awful, and the government was making a pig’s ear of things – so no change there.

On page eleven, near the bottom, a headline got her attention: Two Dead in Soho Robbery.

Connie shuddered and moved on; she didn’t need to read the details.

England had gone to the bloody dogs.
