Inspector Kostoev signed for the prisoner in Room 211.“Hello, Andrei Romanovich.”

Chikatilo remained silent.

“Why don’t you say hello, Andrei Romanovich?”

Still no reply.

“Listen to me, Andrei Romanovich, I’m an inspector per-forming his duty and you’re a man under arrest. Since we haveto work together, we should treat each other with respect.”“Hello,” said Chikatilo very quietly.

“You may be seated,” replied Kostoev, glad for the firstsmall victory of the day.

He watched Chikatilo move to the chair with a slow, elderlygait which said. How can you be doing this to a person my age?

It was almost four o’clock in the afternoon. Kostoev had notwanted to begin the interrogation until he knew what thesearch of Chikatilo’s apartment had produced. That was theirlast chance for material evidence, bloody clothing, a body part.But his home proved as clean as his crime sites.

Twenty-three knives, some police newspapers, no real evi-dence.

“And how are you feeling today, Andrei Romanovich? Yes-terday you said you had heart pains. That’s passed now, 1 don’tneed to call a doctor?”
