CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“What are the cameras doing here?” Lexi asked Tony the next morning. She had been checking on the silverback that had been brought in during the night by the field vet, Noah, when she happened to look out the window and see Dan setting his equipment up next to the building site.

“We’re filming the building progress today.”

Tony had just waltzed into the clinic looking like he’d stepped out of Outdoor Magazine. He wore khaki shorts, the trendy kind that reached just below the knee, and a cream t-shirt with a palm tree on it. He looked fresh and breezy. By comparison, Lexi felt puffy-eyed and groggy. She needed coffee and plenty of it.

“I was about to put the kettle on,” she said, heading to her office. Tony followed as she knew he would. It had become his habit to pop in after her morning rounds. She enjoyed their little discussions about the ongoing building work and Robert’s plans for the sanctuary. Occasionally, they ventured on to other topics, but other than what she’d told him about her parents, they’d stayed clear of anything too personal.

“I heard you had an eventful night,” he remarked, as soon as they were in her office.

She nodded, filling the kettle and switching it on. Had she ever? “Yes, there’s a lone silverback that was ousted from Bongi’s clan, who came in last night with nasty attack wounds on his neck. I suspect he got into a fight with another silverback, perhaps even Bongi.” She stifled a yawn. “It was a long night.”

“Is that because he tried to challenge the dominant male?”

“You’ve been reading Robert’s books,” Lexi remarked, impressed he’d made the effort. “Yes, occasionally they try to challenge the dominant male, especially if he’s aging, like Bongi. It’s either that or they have to start their own clan.”

“I have been doing a little homework,” he admitted. “As the dominant male, I suppose Bongi has to constantly be on the lookout for threats from younger males.”

“He does now.” Lexi poured them each a cup. “I’ve asked the rangers in that area to check up on him in case he’s injured too.”

“Not so different to us humans,” mused Tony, as she handed him a steaming mug.

She laughed, acknowledging the fact with a little tilt of her head. “On a basic level we aren’t much different to our predecessors.”

“Speaking of threats,” he began, pausing to sip his coffee. Lexi waited. “I got a call from my finance officer this morning, he’s the man I left in charge. The board is eager for me to get back to London. The share price has stabilized and we’ve got a potential new project in Ecuador … Anyway, the point is they need me back.”

“And how do you feel about that?” She straightened up. The news was inevitable, but it still came as something of a shock. She’d got used to having him around.

He looked away, his shoulders slumping ever so slightly. “I have to go, there’s no question about that. I was hoping to have another week or two here, but I can’t delay any longer.
