Chapter 10

Ed and Jack were downstairs drinking coffee when Zoey came down with her luggage.

She tried not to look at Jack, but she couldn’t help it, especially when he stood up and pulled out her chair.

“What have I missed?” Zoey asked casually.

“Nothing. Your father-in-law has been playing Ranger.”

“I don’t understand. What’s he talking about, Ed?” Zoey inquired.

“I just asked if he was married, which he is not. Then I asked if he was dating anyone; he said no. And I asked if he had children.”

“All right, Ed, you aren’t the only Ranger in the family. Zoey has already asked these same questions.”

“Maybe she has a friend she wants to set you up with? What do you think Zoey, do you have someone in mind?”

“I, um, no. All my friends are married or in serious relationships.” No way was Zoey telling him about Jill. Besides Jill hooked up with some giant the other night. Nope, Jack didn’t need to know about her single, successful, and drop-dead gorgeous friend. Besides, Jack and Jill! Really? Not even going there.

“Well, I tried, Jack.” Ed shrugged and winked at Zoey.

They had a light-hearted breakfast. Zoey had forgotten how much she enjoyed Ed’s company. It didn’t hurt that his presence broke the tension between her and Jack. They could joke and laugh, just as they had previous nights. Could they be friends only while she was getting her life back? She wasn’t sure how to do that. Who could she ask? The person she trusted the most was Jack, and he might not be the most subjective person in this area.

“Let me go check out at the front desk. Zoey, if you and the girls need to stay here longer, I can give you my credit card,” Jack offered.

“Jack, that’s very kind, but I’m fine. I’m not sure what our plans are, it really depends on when we can leave. I’d prefer to sleep in my own bed as soon as possible,” Zoey said sincerely.

“Sure, I can understand that. Well, if you both are ready, we can pack the car and head to the police station.” Jack motioned for them to leave.

For Zoey and Jack, they would always remember their stay as Mr. and Mrs. Wellston.

The drive to the police station was quiet. Everyone was in their own head.

Zoey was thinking about how thoughtful and protective Jack was, making sure she and the girls had a place to stay. Knowing Bruce’s income situation, they had seized his assets, and by extension hers could have been too. Thankfully Sharon had sent her a text that morning telling her that the Feds didn’t seize her accounts. At least, not yet.

Jack was wondering why he revealed so much to Ed. He had told him the truth about having a child. He had planned on telling Zoey, but it had to be at the right time. He knew trust was important, and he never wanted to lie to her, but at that moment, telling her that his daughter’s mother killed her was not the right time.
