Yutani had a grave look on his face as he returned to the living room, shortly after Herne and I finished talking to Rayne.

“I have someone looking into Reggie’s finances,” I said. “Someone who can bring up information we wouldn’t have access to.”

“Rayne?” Rhiannon said, a faint smile crossing her face. “Rayne’s a good ally to have, even though I don’t believe you should ever turn your back on a vampire.”

“I found out some things about Reggie,” Yutani said, situating himself in a chair, his tablet at the ready. “First, he was asked to leave the Cyprus Bay Pod—that’s where he was born. Near Cyprus. He was accused of harassment, though the Matriarch couldn’t prove it, so they gave him enough money to keep him until he could get situated again, and forbade him to ever return. The recommendations aren’t exactly forged, but they weren’t for the job of teacher, either. They were given to him when he was young and worked at a restaurant. He basically cribbed them from that reference, because the originals would have been too archaic.”

“Well, that’s a mistake on our part.” Clemoné shook his head. “I have no idea if we followed through on them, or if we just accepted them at face value. It seems now that it would have to be the latter.”

“Right. Well, after he left the Cyprus Bay Pod, Reggie moved to Ireland, to the Castlemagee Pod. He told them his own Pod had been destroyed by orca shifters. That was credible enough—it happens. The orca shifters can be ruthless. They took him in, and he worked there until several young women in the Castlemagee Pod vanished. One was found dead—she had been sexually abused—but the others just vanished. There was talk about Reggie, but nothing to tie him to any of the disappearances or the murder. But enough suspicion fell his way that, once again, he had to leave. He seems to have disappeared from the grid for a number of years, until he showed up here, and you hired him,” Yutani said, looking at Clemoné. “I suggest next time you take on a new teacher, you thoroughly vet him.”

“Yutani,” Herne said, a little more sharply than he probably meant to.

Yutani shrugged. “There’s more.”

“It sounds like his stint in Ireland was mostly before the internet was much of a real thing,” I said. “Do you think he’s possibly sublimating his desire to kill and attack, into kidnapping?”

“I’m sorry, but I have to leave. I have a prior engagement that I can’t get out of,” Clemoné said, standing abruptly.

“Are you sure? This is important,” Rhiannon said.

“I’d cancel if I could, but I can’t. Fill me in tomorrow, please.” He edged toward the door and before Rhiannon could speak, was gone.

“Well, he had places to go,” Yutani said, staring at the door.

“Apparently so.” Rhiannon looked miffed, but she returned her focus to the conversation. “You were saying, Yutani?”

“I think Ember’s right. I believe that Reggie may be sublimating his desire to attack the girls by kidnapping them and selling them.
