The crunching and snapping of leaves and twigs under my feet announced our march into the forest, though Liam made no sound, driving us closer to where the five campers had been torn to shreds barely a week ago. No caution tape remained, but trampling police boots still disturbed the grass and surrounding foliage, leaving a clear path from the road to the crime scene. Blood still stained the rocks and leaves, a reminder of the atrocities committed here.

“I don’t really get you and my sister. Like are you together? On a break? Do you make out still or—”

“Just keep walking.” Liam surveyed the woods, searching.

The scent of pine swirled on the fresh winter air as a fog clung to my skin like the mist left by a hot shower. I kicked a rock, and it nailed a nearby tree trunk. “Do you like her?” Liam should know his audience. I didn’t give up that easily.

“Pepper.” He shaped my name around a rough warning, but I didn’t care.

I continued to stare at the ground as I pressed. “You know, she has feelings for you, strong feelings.”

Liam stopped and swung around, catching me when I tripped over a tree stump. “I am not having this conversation with you.” He looked down at my feet. “And watch where you’re walking,” he bit out, as if he could sever the discussion and be rid of my pestering.

Tough luck. If he was going to be a giant tool bag, I was going to call him out on it. I crossed my arms, lips twisting.

“You can’t deny the way you two act with each other. I mean, seriously, dude, what do you call that romantic hero goodbye you just gave her?” I made my voice a mocking, suave rasp.

Liam flushed. Point proven. One for Pepper. For a fearless hunter, Liam was a lame ass when it came to emotions and relationships.

“You’re reading too much into it.”

Now he was just a big fat liar. “Oh really. Would you pucker up to Dustin’s noggin like that?” I pursed my lips against the unwanted vision I’d summoned. That would just be awkward.

Liam groaned. “You made your point. Happy?”

“No, actually.” I kicked another stone. “Explain it to me. Why are you both so hot and cold with each other?”

“Pepper.” This time he dipped my name in a pool of exasperation.

I blew out a pouf of air. “Olivia deserves more than some on again off again crap. I’m just saying, it’d be nice if someone fought for her. I thought maybe that could be you.” I shrugged. “Maybe not. But I had hoped.” Livy grew up way too fast. She’d never had someone dote on her. I kinda wanted that for my sister.

A branch snapped, and Liam’s arm whipped out to halt my step. A haze settled over the trees, making it hard for my eyes to adjust to the movements in between the bark. Dark gray clouds covered the sun, leaving the breeze chilly. “What was that?”

“Well, at least you didn’t bring the one with the small bladder.
