It’s been nearly a month since I started working for the Hunter family. Daisy is a sweetheart, but it seems as though Zeke is trying each day to find a new way to test my patience. The kids dad is in Toronto tonight, but he’s coming home tomorrow, and I won’t be around Zeke for nearly a week. It’s the all-star break, and Hunter wasn’t voted in to the team. I’ve started following hockey a bit since I started working for Hunter, and I think it’s bullshit. He’s had a great year, but it seems like some people consider him a bit of a bad guy, at least according to the shifter league message boards I’ve come across, and some people won’t vote for a heel. For what it’s worth, I think he’s nice. And hot. Good lord, Hunter is hot.

We’re in the kitchen, making dinner together when Zeke pulls his latest stunt. We’re making pasta, something easy, and my back is turned from the stove when I hear a massive bang. I know what I’m going to see before I even turn around. Still, I take a deep breath and turn and look, and my worst fears are confirmed. The large pot of spaghetti sauce is now lying on its side on the floor, the red colored sauce was absolutely everywhere.

“Sorry,” Zeke says, standing next to the pot. His pant leg is covered in the sauce. I know he’s done this on purpose, I know he’s looking for attention. Well, he’s about to get it.

“Clean this up,” I say. Daisy is standing off to the side and I glance at her. Her eyes are filled with tears. Seeing her brother do all of this, watching him self destruct and try to take everyone else down with him is pushing her little eight-year-old brain, and heart, to the limit. She needs this to stop, and I realize I’ve been sent here to stop this.

“You’re the maid, you clean it up,” Zeke says. He sets his jaw and stares at me. He’s testing me.

“I’m not a maid,” I say. “Take those pants off and clean this up. Don’t step anywhere else, you’ll just track it through the house.

“I’m not taking my pants off you weirdo, and I’m not cleaning this up.”

I step forward in a flash that surprises the eleven-year-old. His eyes go wide as I grab his arm and squeeze. I know I’m hurting him, but I’m okay with that.

“Take those off, you can’t walk around the house with them. I won’t look, and I’ll go get you other pants. Then, you will change, and you will clean this up.”

“No,” Zeke practically spits the words out.

I squeeze his arm a bit harder. I don’t know what else to do, but I won’t step down. This kid, he’s more beast than human these days. So, I’ll treat him like one.

“Enough!” I yell. I see Daisy shrink back out of the corner of my eye. “Do what I say now!”

I turn around and Daisy hurries out of the kitchen.
