Tracy watched until August was safely in the trees, then she turned back to the hangar. Cal remained beside her protectively, letting her take the lead. Inside they found the Nanders cowering in the corner. The Vorlox were milling about in confusion, wailing loudly. Tracy could feel their panic and terror in her mind and knew it was from the injured man.
Zooth was trying to hold him, but he struggled and freed himself, his mind blasting images of madness and terror. Zooth rolled away from him and grabbed her head. Tracy sank to her knees and Cal was rolling on the floor grasping his head when suddenly it stopped. Zooth regained her feet and gathered the madman into her arms again as he whimpered like a lost child.
Cal and Tracy slowly regained their feet as Zooth tried to comfort the distraught one in her arms. “They have ruined his mind,” croaked Zooth, as she continued to rock him back and forth. “It is completely unthinkable, what they have done,” she was using voice, so everybody could understand what had happened.
The other Vorlox nodded in agreement. “It is our strongest taboo,” said one. “This is beyond belief. What are we to do against such madness?”
“You have to stop playing by the rules,” said Cal. “They aren’t. You can sense them, you have to fight them.”
“That is against everything we believe,” said another. “We would be no better than them.”
“Then this is what you can look forward to,” said Tracy, as she pointed to the whimpering man in Zooth’s arms. “Can you help him, Zooth?”
“No, Tracy, he is beyond help now. What was done to his mind cannot be undone. My lover is lost to me. I am alone and empty inside. I hope the Hunter kills them all.”
The other Vorlox stepped back from her, alarmed. They looked at her intensely, but her eyes started to wander. “His mind is starting to affect her, and the rest of us. Do something. One of you do something.”
The madman suddenly screamed and leaped to his feet, looking wildly all about in terror. Zooth looked lost and confused. As the madman lashed out with his mind Cal opened fire. Four bullets to the chest and the man sank to the floor, dead. His mind was still at last. Zooth’s eyes cleared as her mind was released from the madman’s grip. She ran to him and knelt to hold his head gently.
Cal was standing in front of Tracy protectively, the gun still in his hand. Tracy had her guns out as well and was watching the other Vorlox. Zooth shook her head sadly and sent a mental message to Tracy who lowered her guns.
“It’s all right, Cal, she understands. It had to be done. He was beyond help. They destroyed his mind in a way that would also destroy the others. Your solution was the only one possible, but they would not have been able to do it themselves.” Cal nodded and lowered his weapon.
