She’s dead.

The way he said it, the sorrow coating his voice affected me more than I ever could have thought. Maybe it’s because at some point, I, too, had thought I lost the only love I’ve ever had.

Losing mom didn’t even hurt as much as losing Roman did. I was sure I was going to die from the pain of him being taken away from me.

I’ve gone through a lot in my life, and still, nothing has hurt as much as the moment when I found out Roman was gone.

“What the fuck are you talking about?!”

A loud crash from the other room startles me, sending the scalding hot baking dish to the ground.

Freshly baked scalloped potatoes splatter over the kitchen floor, some of it landing on the top of my foot, the hot oils burning my skin on impact.

“Ahh, shit…” I mumble, listening to the violent crashing coming from the living room.

Leaving the mess on the ground, I look up the stairs, listening to the shower still running.

Mom must not have heard the crash.

I carefully step around the fallen food and broken ceramic pieces.

Peeking my head around the doorframe, I watch as dad holds Liam in a tight embrace, his head in the space between dad’s shoulder and neck.

Dad is whispering something in his ear, but I can’t hear it.

Honestly, I can’t focus on anything other than the destruction. The center glass table is across the room, leaving glass scattered all around the floor. There are random holes in the wall beside my head, Liam’s bloody knuckles letting me know he punched them himself. Couch cushions lie in heaps on the floor with its ugly yellow foam sprinkled around the room.

What the hell just happened?

I must have said it out loud because suddenly Dad and Liam both look at me, both grief and anger displayed on Liam’s face.

“He’s dead. He’s fucking DEAD!”

My heart instantly drops into the pit of my stomach.

Who’s dead? Roman?

Please don’t let it be Roman.

Anyone else, just not him.

I feel the tears flowing down my face.

Wiping them away, I choke out, “Who’s dead?” Please don’t say, Roman. Please don’t say, Roman.

Please…

“Tommy,” dad whispers.

I can breathe again.

Everything is okay, as long as it wasn’t Rom-

“Roman killed him.” And just like that… everything falls apart again.

No.

No… that can’t be.

They’re brothers… best friends.

“Tha-that can’t be true…” I whisper to myself, unable to comprehend what dad is saying.

Even Liam seems to be in disbelief, screaming incoherent words into dad’s chest, his words coming out choked as the tears drip down his throat.

“What happened?” I finally get out. My throat feeling squeezed from the inside out.

“I don’t know… they’re taking him now.”

Gripping the doorframe, I brace myself against it, listening to Liam’s wails grow louder while my body sways, ready to give out at any moment, but I need to know.

“Taking who?”

“Tommy… and Roman.”

My knees hit the ground before I have a chance to stop them. The pain of glass digging into my skin doesn’t compare to the agony my heart feels as it breaks in my chest.
