Chapter 16

I wanted to crawl and hide six feet under. This couldn’t be happening! It was too much, all at once! I said my last prayers to all the gods, hoping my death would be easy and merciless. I had no willpower left to fight the werewolves.

The beasts jumped to me, shifting midair, the air blazing in emerald light. Instantly, they transformed into young, fit men. I gawked at them, numb. Fates, I’d completely forgotten about Aidan’s men who he’d placed to guard and protect me. These werewolves weren’t here to inflict harm but to help me. Thank God! Maybe the gods did hear my prayers after all?

“Miss Destiny Broman, are you alright?” One of the transformed werewolves asked me. He had copper hair and blue eyes: an interesting combination. He was at least six-foot-one, all muscles. He wasn’t older than twenty-five at the most; his partner was dark-haired, with dark eyes, nearly the same age and height as his blue-eyed colleague. “We tried to intervene, but a giant dark cloud kept throwing us away. We’re so sorry we couldn’t help you against the demon, ma’am.”

“Yup. I managed to kill the asshole. Lucky me.” I forced a smile, my heart rate slowing down. The rush of adrenaline had subsided now that I wasn’t in mortal danger.

“Holy Moon Goddess! You’re hurt! Jack, let’s get her home. Do you feel pain?” The dark-eyed werewolf kneeled beside me and pointed at the nasty gash in my middle.

It was weird that pain shot through me, swelling inside my body only after he drew my attention to it. Yeah, ignorance was bliss.

Jack placed his hand on my back, and his deep scent of musk and spices cleared my head. The pain subsided in my belly. “You’ll feel better for now, but we need to tend to your wounds. Do you have some healing potions or charms?”

I weakly nodded. The other guy swept me off the ground and carried me gently in his bulging arms. His scent of pine trees caressed my senses, filling my nostrils with longing for a walk or a jog in the fresh mountain breeze. The other guy, Jack, lifted my bike, purse, and the gun that dropped after I unloaded the whole magazine into the monster. He put my bike under his right arm, my purse and the gun in the other. I stared stupidly at him: he carried the bike as if it were a children’s toy. Holy hell!

“Hmm, silver bullets?” He muttered more to himself than to us, but I heard him. I shrugged in response: I didn’t care what I’d shot the damn demon with; the important thing was he was sent back to his Hell of origin. He’d be joining his buddy, Marcus. A sick satisfaction swelled in my chest, and I couldn’t help but grin.

“Where did you get this gun from?” Jack asked me as we neared my house. I indicated to them that the garden door was open.

“My godmother gave it to me. Why? Is there a problem with it?”

“No, it’s good.
