Benjamin

The healers had just left the room to confer about the next attempt to cure Cody when Jay appeared. I could tell he didn’t see me, but something in the way he moved made me hang back for a second.

My claws came out when he leaned over Cody, a phial in one hand.

Mother fucker.

I grabbed him and threw him back, drawing blood where my claws bit through his leather jacket. I drew my claws back in and used my fists instead, my wolf rising as I beat the hell out of him.

Hands grasped my shoulders and waist and I struggled against them as the healers pulled me off him.

"What the hell are you doing?" Melody, the head healer, stared at us in horror.

I scoffed and shrugged off the hands that held me. “He fucking snuck in here with more of that poison to finish the job, and you’re looking at me like I’m crazy?”

Jay shook off the offer of help and stood, wiping the blood from his nose with the tail of his shirt. “What is with you assholes and breaking my nose?”

I grinned at him and he lunged, but Melody stepped between us.

"What poison, Mr. Swift?" She held out her hand for the phial, and he gave it to her readily.

“It’s not poison; if anyone cares to know the truth,” he muttered, more blood running from his mouth as he crunched his mashed nose back into shape and began to heal. “It’s a tincture that might just offset whatever is running through Cody’s system.”

“And how did you come to have this?”

He flinched at the accusation in her voice but squared his shoulders and met my eyes in a glare. “I stole it from my father to help Cody, because without it he’ll die.”

The healer undid the stopper and sniffed it. “I think I understand most of what’s in this.”

"What's more important is the assassin tailored their poison for wolves. It's not just wolfsbane, most of us have at least some immunity to it from drinking the stuff in that moonshine even the teenagers drink it."

I shrugged at the healer. “I don’t trust him, but if you can tell it’s good, then I can’t stop you from trying. You’ve barely stopped the poison from spreading and he’s not getting any better.”

She placed a few drops on this tongue and a couple more on the open wound, and we watched as it closed as fast as any normal wound would. "It worked." Even she sounded surprised, which didn't escape Jayson.

He rolled his eyes at me and snorted. “Yeah, don’t worry about it, it was my pleasure to save the little shit.” He skulked off, pushing his way past the healers who were beginning to crowd the room at the miracle we were witnessing.

I stopped him in the hall, struggling to apologize and making a poor job of it. "Look man, just… Thank you for bringing it. You could've let him die and we never would've known."

“Well, I’m not my father. No one seems to remember that, but I’m not.
