Chapter Seven

Brooke immediately looked up. Her eyes were wide and scared, and there was certainly the implication that she knew that scream. Ken and Jill had the same expressions on their faces, and Emma felt her skin go pale. Who was screaming? Was it someone that Emma knew?

When the scream came again, followed by a cry for help, Brooke and Ken were suddenly throwing their chairs back and rushing down the stairs. Emma and Harper followed suit, even if they were a little confused. Emma found herself hesitating once again, wondering what would cause such a terrified scream and cry for help in a place as safe as the precinct. Was it safe enough for Emma to stay the night here? Even with Jill and Brooke promising to stay, and Ken saying that everyone was doing overtime, that didn’t mean anything if the place wasn’t safe.

Brooke and Ken turned down the staircase in the corner of the precinct, following the screams that led into the forensics and evidence sector. They were taking the stairs two at a time, nearly throwing themselves down the stairs if they could. Emma and Harper were hot on their tail, and the next thing they knew, they were in the medical examiner's room.

That’s where Audrey was standing, holding her hand over a bleeding wound in her arm. Her eyes were wide and horrified, and Emma felt her skin chill to the bone.

Brooke, on the other hand, looked livid.

She pushed her way past Ken into the office and grabbed someone. Emma couldn’t see who it was, but Brooke was clearly about to make them wish that they were never born. When she came out of the office, however, Emma was confused.

It was the chief medical examiner.

Brooke threw him to the ground so hard that his arms actually gave out. He wasn’t able to catch himself, and the knife in his hand flew from his fingers. The knife was covered in blood. Ken squatted down slowly, withdrawing a latex glove from his pocket and picking up the knife.

“Jill,” Ken barked. “I need an evidence bag.”

Jill rushed back upstairs, seeming happy to get out of there.

Brooke put her foot on the medical examiner's back. Emma heard the M.E. cry out in pain as Brooke applied pressure.

“I’m unarmed!” He gasped. “You don’t need to use force!”

“Oh, I don’t have to,” Brooke growled. “But I want to.”

“Brooke,” Audrey called out. “Brooke, stop.”

Brooke applied more pressure. The M.E screamed, and for a second Emma wondered if she should intervene. Then, Ken was there. He gently put his arm on Brooke’s shoulder, and in an instant, the murderous rage in her eyes died out. She backed off of the M.E., but she still looked angry.

“You better have a great explanation for this, or so help me,” Brooke snarled.

“I can explain,” The M.E cried. “Please.”

“I can’t wait to hear this,” Brooke shook her head as she slapped some handcuffs on the M.E’s back. Emma got the sensation that Brooke probably tightened them as far as they would go.
