CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Garron watched carefully as the wary pair of wolves moved down the tunnel. One was a Riverdancer and the other a Crystalfur, and both had been instructed by Typo to simply move through the dungeon. They were as wary as any animal would be in unfamiliar territory, and they were right to feel that way.

The Riverdancer took a cautious step forward, and Garron held his breath. Nothing happened. In a smooth, lithe gait, the creature continued forward, completely unharmed. Garron let out a disappointed sigh, but a moment after, the Crystalfur stepped into the same space.

With a grinding hiss, a set of stone spikes shot out of the wall, slamming into the wolf’s glittering coat. Ahead, the Riverdancer instantly flattened against the ground, managing to avoid being hit. The stone wolf behind it weathered the strikes, none of the spikes managing to actually hurt it.

<Excitement!>

“Wow! I mean, I know you said that would happen, but still! How’d you do it?” Andros gave him an enthusiastic pat on the back.

Garron gave a small smile of his own. “There’s a stone plate with a little blade on the bottom resting just above a string. The string runs into the wall and holds up another plate that blocks the spikes from escaping. When someone steps on the first plate, the blade cuts the string and the barrier falls, so the spikes can shoot out.”

“How do you make the spikes go flying out like that, sir engineer?” Andros gave a little chuckle.

“Springs in the walls. There’s a few holding up the plate too.” That had actually taken the most time, because Typo hadn’t understood the concept of a coiled, compressible piece of metal. Truth be told, Garron barely understood it either—he hadn’t seen them more than once or twice in the engineer’s devices—but once he’d gotten Typo to start making models, they’d quickly settled on the appropriate design.

Andros gave a low whistle, then another laugh. “I don’t know, Gar, it sounds a little too simple to me. Where’s the army of ants to haul up the plate when it’s done?”

Garron let out a huff that could faintly be considered a laugh. “Maybe next time.”

“Garron…”

Garron eyed his grinning friend… the smile was just a little too wide. For a moment, the expression froze on his face, then dropped.

“Are you okay? I mean, you’re a little… subdued.”

Garron let out a little laugh. “Big word.”

“You swine…” Andros gave him a reproachful look.

“I’m fine. It’s just… we just killed somebody in here yesterday, you know?” Garron ran a hand through his hair in consternation.

Andros’ face said he’d already known what Garron would say. “Did you ever hear what Hal did before he joined up with Jackson? He killed a man, Gar. We aren’t talking about self-defense. He stole the poor man’s stuff and left. The only reason he joined with Jackson was because the kingdom couldn’t enforce its laws on Noble estates anymore.”

Garron nodded, subdued. “I know. I… don’t feel bad about it. Not the killing, I mean.
