Learning from Demobilized Youth

The use of child soldiers remains a tremendous problem in Colombia and a significant roadblock to peace. Yet, dangerous misunderstandings exist about the role of adolescents in armed conflict. Understanding that adolescents more often than not choose to join armed groups, and more important understanding why, will be the key to successfully undermining the illegal recruitment of these youth into violence. Furthermore, there are important lessons to be learned from the circumstances surrounding youth who mobilize that should inform demobilization and reintegration programs that seek to effectively return these youth to their communities. Knowing that young adults seek a sense of agency and identity—often from dangerous sources in the absence of peaceful opportunities—is crucial to preventing the recruitment of these youth into armed groups and ensuring that, when they demobilize, they are provided the opportunities and improved circumstances they lacked when they decided to mobilize.
