Figure 75. Age profiles of wildebeest carcasses encountered in different diurnal contexts in the Serengeti. Part (a) shows three sets of contexts defining the marginality (cf. Binford 1983) of scavenging, including whether lions and/or hyenas were present upon discovery of a carcass, whether the carcass was discovered with flesh or only marrow and head contents remaining, and whether the cause of death was natural or due to predation. Raw data are shown in Table 7.3. The twosample Kolmogorov-Smirnov Z score is shown for each context. Any Z<1.96 is not significant (NS). No significant differences are found for any of the paired contexts. Also shown are the ideal age distributions for catastrophic and attritional mortality taken from Figure 7.4. All but one of the Serengeti carcass sub-samples are more similar to catastrophic mortality in the dominance of prime adults over aged adults, albeit with lower than expected proportions of sub-juveniles and juveniles.
