SEVEN.

Lora fumbled with the keys, still a little anxious, although Hulk’s presence had helped to banish most of her concerns and worries. The way she leaned into his strength and comfort surprised her.

She was a mistrustful woman, and she had learned it was a necessity in a world of shitty people. Well, that was the issue, though. She had been around the wrong kind of people.

She looked at this tatted and giant biker, one that should inflect fear in her, but he didn’t. She knew appearances were mostly facades. Her monsters had been suited men, and women in lovely dresses.

You’re being a drama queen, Lora. Your parents aren’t monsters. They’re homophobic, misogynistic, bullies, greedy, and they don’t love you, but those are human weaknesses. Your parents were awful people, yes, but…

These women suffered considerably more than you. So pull your crap together, silly Lora. It was just a shitty cop being a dick, nothing else. You had plenty of attention because of him. Hulk is here, and he looks… concerned.

“Lora, sweetheart, are you okay?” he asked. Crap. She had been daydreaming in front of her apartment’s door.

“K, yes…” she said and tried to put the key in the hole again. Why did her hands shake so much? What was happening to her?

“Breathe, hon,” he whispered in the shell of her ear, and then wrapped his fingers around hers with one hand, and took the keys. He opened the door in the blink of an eye and then he enveloped her waist and lifted her. She widened her eyes, but his smile put her at ease. “Here you are. Home. Safe and sound.”

He delivered her on the couch, and she sighed. He was looking around, and his frown alarmed her. She pulled her lower lip between her teeth when she saw what he was taking in. The chaos in her living room was…

Yes, she wasn’t the tidiest woman around, and not a morning person either. She had left her place in a hurry when Susan told her she was on her way. Her dirty coffee mug was on the table, next to the apple peel. And she had left her laundry on a chair.

She had intended to iron and store the shirts, but… She was too much into the romance novel she was about to finish and wanted to give Susan back. She succeeded in that task, at least. Oh, no, she forgot the new novel in Susan’s car! Hulk’s hawk brought her mind to Earth again.

“Oh… I’m sorry… This is a mess…”

“Don’t you worry, hon.” He sat by her side, and the cushions sank behind his heavyweight. “Tell me, how are you feeling?” His deep gaze seemed to scan her face and reach her guts.

“I’m still upset. I should have said something to that cop when he…”

“Nah, Lora, that only would have enraged him more. Those fuckers aren’t reasonable. They feed on people’s fear and anguish.” He sighed and scraped his jaw, and Lora almost lifted her hand to pet the thick beard.
