Horse Memorial, Port Elizabeth

On 24 July, thousands of people came – local people who could walk to town, and others who came by tram or train from the surrounding areas – to take part or just to view the procession, which included a zebra brought from the Halifax Zoo by its keeper, S. Hinds. The procession was led by Mr Winks in a motor car, followed by the mayoress in a horse-drawn carriage. After the massive parade had marched around the town, a mock auction was held. One dog, ‘bought’ by a tripe dresser called Guy Gotherd, was then given back and auctioned again. After the fourth auction, the dog had raised £5 7s (£5.35). Mr Gotherd then donated a Pomeranian, which was ‘sold’ for 15/- (75p). When all the money had been collected over £1,000 had been raised.

On 4 September 1915, the Huddersfield Chronicle published a letter from Arthur J. Coke, who was the secretary of ODFL. He had been in France inspecting the Blue Cross hospitals there. In Moret there were four hospitals, made up of fourteen wards for 200 horses. Provins also had four hospitals containing almost as many horses in seven wards, whilst Troyes had three hospitals for 125 horses. He described how one horse had been taken in with nineteen shrapnel wounds that had had to be extracted over two painful days. One bullet, in fact, had only just missed the vital areas of the neck. Not surprisingly, there was also a plea for funds to continue with this important work. The hospital in Moret named ‘Huddersfield’ specialised in surgery and pharmacy work, where horses that were contaminated (i.e. had infectious diseases such as mange) could be treated (The Blue Cross at War).
