VICTORIA

There were a few things Victoria never expected to do in her life.

The first had happened with Axton a few weeks ago. The second was being swept off her feet to an undisclosed location.

Yet here she was, sitting in Axton's fancy car, being driven out of the city. She didn't know what the car's brand was, but judging by the sleek leather interior and the spaceship-looking console, it was worth more than she would make in a few years.

But that was nothing compared to her shock when she saw just what Axton had meant by his family estate.

She hadn't been able to see the house from the road or when Axton turned the car down a long laneway, each side of which was decorated by tall, healthy trees and the occasional well-tended flower bush.

The mansion … because that was the only way to describe it … was made of deep burgundy stone, and it was easily five stories high. It was the largest house she had ever seen in her life, and she wouldn't have been surprised if the Duchess of Cambridge had walked out to welcome her.

"Your family owns this?" she couldn't help the shock in her tone.

Axton smiled at her as he parked the car by a fancy and massive statue of a wolf. "Yeah. It's been in the Wolverton-Lupine family for a few generations. The land and surrounding forest are also ours. My parents rarely stay here anymore. My mother prefers their place in Monaco."

"Monaco as in Europe?"

He grinned. "Yes, I believe that's the one."

"So, you're a millionaire."

"My parents are millionaires."

She rolled her eyes. "I'm pretty sure that is a millionaire's car and a millionaire's family home."

Axton shrugged before he jumped out of the car to open her door. Victoria had the burning desire to tell him he didn't behave at all like a man who had this kind of money. Had she known the night they met, she would probably have done things differently.

She would have stayed very far away from him because this kind of place and this kind of wealth were beyond anything she could feel comfortable with. Her family hadn't exactly been poor because Uncle Bobby was the kind of man who believed wealth was actually love and good food.

Of course, it didn’t help that he gambled away a lot of the money he did make. The Bransons had known what it was like to scrape by and do as best as they could to make ends meet.

The bar hadn't always been the most lucrative business, and the grief of losing his sister and brother-in-law had nearly broken Uncle Bobby. He hadn't exactly planned on raising two orphans, but he had done his very best. It just so happened that Uncle Bobby’s coping mechanism was terrible.

Victoria didn't think of her life as sad or as some terrible struggle. Even during one of their bleakest hours, when the bar was close to shutting down, she had been able to rally the cash to keep away people who would have taken advantage of their poor luck.
