Blurb
The blurbâs the short piece of text that introduces potential readers to your story. You need to get this right - itâs the next thing people see once your coverâs attracted them and theyâve clicked through to find out more.
You donât want to lose people at this stage!
As with the story structure, thereâs a simple structure you can use to write blurbs. I base mine around one paragraph on her, one paragraph on him and one paragraph on what happens when their lives collide.
Remember that most of your readers will be women; the heroine needs to appeal to them, and thatâs more likely to come from an emotional connection of some kind. Ideally, theyâre going to read that first paragraph and think âthatâs kind of like me.â
The second paragraph - the guy - needs to appeal to them in a different kind of way. His physicality, his mood or whatever. Whatever you choose to highlight of him, he needs to come over as the kind of guy that your reader might like to spend some alone time with.
The third paragraph focuses on their time together and needs to hint at what happens. A kind of âsparks fly when Candy and Martin meetâ type of thing. If thereâs some kind of kink involved (and there should be in most short erotica), mention that here. I tend not to be too explicit, but you need to make sure that the reader knows what sheâs getting.
Your blurb should be snappy, upbeat and interesting enough to make your reader take the next step. Donât rush this; have something you can ruminate over for a couple of days at least, and if you have a confidante who could look it over for you, ask them for suggestions.
As with everything, check out other similar books on Amazon and see how their authors are describing them. Ask yourself how much the tone of their blurb encourages you to read the story.
