Business Machines—Rarely

Business machines of all types can have historical significance as evidence of how business processes have changed. However, for a repository, the value of any business machine will come from (1) the type of machine or (2) who used it. A typewriter used by a prominent writer might interest a repository that houses the writer’s papers. CAPCAS strongly applies.

Club and Organizational Records—Usually

The records of clubs and social or professional organizations contain a wealth of information about their activities and about the members and community. Local archives or the main archives of a national organization may find them historically valuable. Records from these clubs might provide a record of club activities as well as a history of the changing role of the people in the club, and a history of the life of individuals in their communities. Many local historical societies would welcome these.

Financial Records—Maybe

Old financial records can have great historical significance. While more difficult to interpret than letters and diaries, financial data have more credibility than anecdotal data. In many cases, the financial data explain the reality behind stories that appear in diaries and letters.

Privacy laws now cover current financial records, especially if they include credit card numbers or social security numbers. Financial advisors caution that things like tax records and bank account records should be kept for a certain amount of time and then shredded. In this age of identity theft, we understand the reason, but we lament the loss of these valuable historical records.
