Chapter Five

Step 5: Enlist Reinforcements to Your Cause

Lady Claire smiled and asked, “You’re in love with him, aren’t you?”

Willie closed her eyes, hesitant to own up to the truth. For goodness sake, this was Jamie’s wife! Still, for some reason, she answered truthfully. “Is it that obvious?”

Aye. Despite his disloyalty, despite his flaws, she was desperately and completely in love with Jamie Ferguson. Even now. She couldn’t suddenly not love him. She couldn’t turn her feelings off as if flipping open her fan or closing a book.

True, she was furious with him. And on the verge of falling into utter despair, only holding herself together by the tips of her fingers.

But still absolutely in love with that man.

Och, getting over Jamie was going to take time. A verra long time. And it was going to hurt like hell along the way.

It already did.

“Good,” said Lady Claire.

Willie opened her eyes, surprised, and stared down this woman who’d captured Jamie’s hand, if not his heart. She laughed, a sort of self-deprecating chuckle of sound. “I want to hate you, you know. But you seem too nice for all that.”

“Well, I don’t know about that,” came her wry reply.

Lady Claire had shocked her again. Both women laughed, which was unexpected and strangely delightful.

Lady Claire’s look turned rueful. “He loves you too, you know.”

Willie choked. What a ridiculous sentiment. “Obviously not.”

Lady Claire walked away and perched on the edge of a chair, all straight back and clasped hands. Perfectly poised. “It’s true. He’s spoken of you so often; I feel as if I know you already.”

Well, that was surprising and somewhat bizarre. Jamie had spoken of her? To his wife?

Willie waved off the implication with a toss of her hand and said, “Oh. Like a sister, you mean.”

Lady Claire smiled and glanced at her hands, “No, definitely not sisterly affection, no.”

What did one say to that? This conversation was becoming decidedly odd. Willie’s benevolent feelings toward the woman turned downright suspicious. Perhaps Lady Claire wasn’t as genuine as she appeared? Was that by design? She certainly wasn’t the meek woman she presented at first glance, more like flawlessly composed.

Too composed.

And her questions were pointed and far too accurate.

Willie narrowed her eyes and raised one brow.
