Chapter Six

Peter had been looking all over the house for his sister and niece for the past twenty minutes. He’d requested Cook make a special treat to keep the girls occupied while he and Audrey discussed the plan for the robbery with her uncle.

Westley had assured him that the girls had not ventured outside, and none of the servants had seen them either. The only person left to ask was Audrey.

The door to her set of rooms was wide open and he was just about to enter when he heard Leona ask, “Do you like my brother?”

Peter’s heart practically stopped, and he was fairly certain he forgot to breathe as he waited for the answer.

A moment later he heard, “I daresay, I do.”

The words reached his heart, giving him hope. First the robbery, then he would court Audrey. Time was of the essence, but he didn’t want to rush things. He wanted her to know him, and more than anything, he wanted to know her.

The moment he entered the room, he was taken aback by the intimate scene. Audrey was holding Kitty while chatting and smiling with his sister. This is what he’d always hoped for. It was as if Audrey was the missing piece in his—no, all—their lives. And to think, this had all started with a visit to the Lyon’s Den.

After sending his sister and niece off to the kitchen for pastries, Peter turned to Audrey, “Your uncle is waiting in the study. He would like to begin reviewing the plan.”

“Oh yes, of course. Mustn’t keep him waiting.” As she hurried past, the faint scent of vanilla entered his nostrils and tempted his desire.

It was going to take all of his energy not to pull her into his arms and kiss her. He had to think of something to keep his mind off wanting to kiss her. And then he realized that she was wearing all black again. He’d seen her in a lovely gown at the theater and in another at his dinner party. Why did she continue to dress now as a widow in mourning? They walked in silence toward the study. Soon he would have to share Audrey with her uncle and would not be able to ask such questions.

The words went from his mind straight out his mouth. “Why do you still wear widow’s weeds?”

“Your niece asked me something similar just a short time ago. Must be a family trait,” she chuckled. She stopped, then turned to face him. “I suppose you think it rather odd after so many years have passed.” A quivering sigh escaped her lips. Peter felt the need to pull her in his arms and comfort her, to take away the pain. “I suppose it has become a part of who I am. As I said before, it does make moving about Town simpler.” She shrugged her shoulders. “People tend to turn the other way and not question. I suppose grief makes people uncomfortable.”

“I know something about that,” he said without thought.
