INVOLVING (OR NOT INVOLVING) YOUR CHILDREN
It’s natural for your children to be interested and sometimes concerned when it comes to butchering chickens. After all, few families stop to consider where their food comes from, and even fewer families have eaten animals they have raised. While I think it is very important that children understand the life cycle and know where food comes from, there might be times when it is better not to involve your children in the butchering process. Some children are better able to handle the process than others, so I recommend that you think about each individual child. Maybe they can’t be involved the first time, but you can recruit them to help on future butchering days. I always leave the decision to be involved up to my children.
If your children want to be involved, butchering day can be a very educational experience. Not only can they help with age-appropriate tasks, but they can learn about humane methods of butchering, and you may be able to work in a few science lessons, as well. It’s fascinating to talk about the organs removed from chickens and their roles. Some children are very interested to see the hearts, lungs, and intestines and understand how they work. Other children might be confused or even frightened by the process, so I recommend you never force a child to participate on butchering day. It might be better in the long run for some children to be removed from the process until they are naturally curious or mature enough to accept the reality of the situation.
