When you have planned your safe storage facility in your basement, you need to also consider the fact that when you go down there you might be trapped or locked down there for a very long time. The reason for this is because while you are down there rescue teams might not be able to reach you, and you might not even be able to see or get in touch with them should they be passing by. It is therefore important that you plan in advance and have things like food and water stashed away in there too so that you can be able to survive the ordeal for as long as you have to stay down under.

In the event that you are able to get in touch with anyone through any communication means possible while you are hidden in your bunker, get the information to them and ask them to get in touch with the relevant authorities and let them know of your position so that you do not accidentally get forgotten or trampled over by rescue teams.

More often than not tornadoes will become a threat you will definitely not wish to deal with. Therefore, be sure to have a place where you can run to when this happens. In the event that you do not have a safe house or a basement in your house, one of the simplest options would be to seek shelter in the middle of your house. Remember to be as far away from the outer walls and windows as possible.

In the event that you happen to be outside when this happens, try and find shelter as fast as you can, or find an open field and lay flat on the ground. If you are driving, avoid the bridges and if you are just passing one, speed up and get way from underneath the bridge as fast as you can. Also avoid being around or on an overpass in the event of a tornado striking. It is however recommended that you avoid vehicles in such a scenario because they have a layer of air space between the tires and the ground, which means that the tornado wind can easily occupy this vacuum and hurl the vehicle into the air, smashing it across anything that it comes across, or hurling it to wherever it may pass through.

In simple terms, whenever you happen to notice a tornado, the first thing you need to do is to find shelter. Do not make the mistake of trying to outrun the tornado because that will most certainly be futile. Do not also make the mistake of remaining outside, or make the silly mistake of trying to be a hero and document the whole thing on live camera. During such times, it is prevailing common sense that will often determine who survives and who doesn’t. Make the wise choice and make it out alive!
