Accentuate the Personal
When putting on the final touches, showcase the pieces and accessories you love that ultimately set your home apart. As you find, curate, and arrange accents, these more intimate touches will tell your story.
When you get dressed in the morning, you put on an outfit and then you add a jacket, jewelry, a scarf, or a headband. These are the touches that personalize your look. Selecting artwork, decorative furniture, mirrors, and other accessories is also personal. My home is a visual collection of mementos from my travels, photos with family, a favorite coffee table book, keepsakes from my wedding, a bowl from my grandmother, an impulse buy at an antiques fair, and so much other inspiration.
As I walk through my home, different rooms hold different elements of my experiences. My bedroom has minimal accessories—a bedside table catchall for jewelry, a wall hanging from a flea market, two art pieces made by a friend. When cooking, I grab a pinch of salt from a ceramic bowl, and I recall a stall in Mexico City. I spotted the long bench in my entryway at a shop in Soho; it’s multipurpose, showcasing a photo of downtown L.A., an occasional stack of books, and is often where I stash my sunglasses. The metal sculpture I found in Santa Barbara is the ideal topper on a stack of books. I accessorize my baby’s room with a piggy bank and favorite books from my childhood, my daughter’s favorite stuffed airplane, bunnies, and pink dinosaur, and with a wooden mobile of varied shapes that is light and airy.
Enjoy this form of expression that is uniquely you; it is how you truly nest. Here, in choosing what you have and how it is presented, it’s fine to abandon practicality. Don’t overthink; eliminate the rules. Be playful and expressive. Accentuate your home with whatever evokes positive memories and brings you joy each day.
