Dry Cleaning

There are several reasons an item is labelled Dry Clean Only. Firstly, there is an element that cannot be immersed in water – this is often something like the stiffeners in tailoring which soften in water, causing the garment to lose its structure. This is common in very high-end bespoke tailoring. The cheap, ready-to-wear garments usually use iron-on polyester interfacing which can be wetted. In fact, the hospitality industry has spawned machine washable polyester suits for bar tenders and waiters. They can be washed and usually tumble-dried (and often don’t need ironing).

The second reason is that while perfectly washable, the garment is incredibly difficult or impossible to iron, and washing distorts fabric, which usually means some degree of ironing is needed. Even if you can pull and stretch something back into shape, it may well need ironing to look halfway decent.
