Fuel Injection Tech

Obviously, the subject of fuel injection encompasses a wide range of topics. The discussion here is limited to the understanding and selection of fuel injectors with a sidebar note regarding camshaft duration and lobe centerline with regards to a fuel injection setup.

Injector Selection

As with selecting the proper size carburetor for a specific engine application, when it comes to choosing injectors sizes, bigger is not always better. A too-small injector won’t be able to deliver enough fuel, which can result in both drivability issues and lean engine damage. With injectors that are too large, idle and low-RPM operation will suffer, as injector pulse width (the amount of time the injector is open) will be too low.

It’s important to understand that simply moving to a larger injector won’t add horsepower unless the engine demands have exceeded the capacity of the original injectors. Changing to larger injectors in an otherwise unmodified engine won’t increase horsepower. The injector size needs to match or support the engine’s fuel requirements.

Before purchasing injectors, consider the brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and injector duty cycle. BSFC represents the amount of fuel (in pounds) the engine will consume per horsepower per hour.

The following are general guidelines when choosing a BSFC number:
