By installing electric lighting in your coop and using a timer, you can turn on the lights during the night to effectively increase the length of each day, causing your chickens to continue laying eggs even as winter sets in. To make certain your chickens continue laying eggs year-round, make sure your coop is litâeither by the sun alone or by a combination of the sun and your electric lightsâfor at least fifteen, maybe even sixteen, hours per day. Be consistent and provide lighting each and every day.
Although it seems like a good idea to have your lights turn on in the evening, it may prove better for your chickens if you set the timer to turn the lights on in the morning, before the sun has risen. This way, you allow your chickens to settle in on their roosts before darkness arrives. Replacing this gradual sunset with electric lightingâwhich goes from light to dark at the flick of a switchâwould leave your chickens in the dark and unable to see where they are before they are settled down for the night, so avoid this if possible. By turning the lights on in the morning, while they are still settled in sleep, you shouldnât have any issues.
And of course, in addition to encouraging your hens to lay eggs all year-round, artificial lighting will enable you to tend to your chickens after dark if neededâhooray!
