Mermaid’s Tail Side Braid

The mermaid’s tail side braid is a very thick braid covering all of the side of the head and hanging down on the side. It gets its name from the fact that it looks like a mermaid’s tail or fish-tail.

To make this braid, first (as always) wash and blow-dry the hair and brush it to remove any tangles.

Brush all of the hair over to one side of the head (say the right side) and divide it into two sections. (Yes, two, not three. Each section will be its own braid. We’ll do some more dividing before we’re through.)

Tie up one of the two sections with a hair tie of some kind and tuck it out of the way while you work on the other section.

Divide the other section into three parts (there, three as usual!) and do an inside-out or inverted braid. This is not a Dutch braid, but a basic inside-out braid. Braid the hair until you run out of hair more or less, and tie it off with an elastic band. At the end of this process you should have one inside out braid and a tied-up section of hair.

Now do the same thing with the other section of hair. Remove the hair tie and braid this section into a basic inside-out braid just as you did the first section. You now have two inside-out braids hanging down on the right side of the head. (You can also do this on the left side instead, of course.)

Now it gets a bit more creative and tricky. This step is optional, but makes for a more interesting appearance. Take the braid that’s furthest away from your face (or the other person’s face if you’re braiding another person’s hair), and gently pull on a number of the hair sections that are furthest away from the face on this braid – that is, furthest back, furthest towards the back of the head – so that they are loosened and form little loops or pockets.

Do the same thing with the other braid, but do it pulling on the hair sections that are closest to the face. When you’re done, both of the braids should have “loopholes” or “needle eyes” down the length of them. The braid closest to the face should have the loopholes on the side closest to the face, while the other braid (the one furthest from the face) should have its needle eyes on the side furthest from the face.

Again, this is optional; you don’t have to have the needle eyes in the braid, but it makes it look more interesting. The essential post-braiding step is this: combine the two braids together with bobby pins down its length so that they are combined together as if they were a single braid. The end result is what you see in the picture: a mermaid’s tail down one side of the head using the mass of hair, and then something appealing done with any remaining hair, which can be curled, or simply brushed nicely.
